3 Things to Consider When Buying a DR Panel

In previous posts, I’ve discussed what at DR panel is and what makes DR panels different from CR systems. Today, I’m going to review some three additional consideration when considering which DR panel to purchase:

  • Price
  • Software
  • Warranty

DR panels come in a wide range of prices. Regardless of which DR panel you chose, it is often one of the most expensive components of a digital x-ray system. This is the component that makes your x-ray system truly digital, and a lot of technology goes into a relatively small package. In general, wireless DR panels tend to be slightly more costly than their tethered counterparts. (For information on wireless vs tethered DR panels click here.)  Depending on additional discounts, specials and promotional pricing from manufacturers, DR panels can range in price anywhere from about $17.5K to more than $34K. Keep in mind that more expensive does not always equate to better. You will need to consider the other two items we will discuss in this article: software and warranty.

Depending on the manufacturer of the DR panel and who you purchase the panel from, DR panels can come with a variety of different software programs. These different software programs all perform the same basic function of acquiring the digital x-ray image, however there can be several different variations of how the software operates, how user friendly it is, how it communicates with other software you may wish to use as well such as an EMR system, and what tools it has available.

The software that comes with the DR panel is probably one of the most important things to look at when comparing DR panels but is often overlooked. Depending on your practice, you and your staff may be working with this software multiple times a day.  The software can play a pivotal role in your overall satisfaction with your x-ray system and can significantly impact your x-ray services. Often the software on a DR panel is proprietary and you may not be able to download alternative software to use with your DR panel. You may have to purchase an entirely new DR panel system just to get different software.

Another key item to look at when comparing DR panels is the warranty and support that comes with the panel.  Pay attention to how many years the DR panel is warrantied for. Not all warranties are created equal. We recommend choosing a DR panel that comes with a 5 year warranty for parts and software. You will also want a panel that comes with good support.

Most support issues for DR panels are related to software. Make sure the DR panel you purchase offers the support you need and is there when you need it. Does the DR panel have 24/7 support available? Can they remote into your system to fix issues quickly? Keep in mind that if the panel itself has to be repaired, that will likely have to occur at the manufacturer’s facility with a clean room. Maven Imaging provides a loaner panel program with our Patient Image DR panels to help minimize downtime if your DR panel needs off-site repairs.

Hopefully this article gave you some additional insight into what to consider when comparing x-ray systems and specifically DR panels. There are many DR panels on the market, and there is definitely more to consider than just the price. Here at Maven Imaging, we have several choices available to accommodate a variety of price points and software preferences. We are always happy to provide you with a software demo (usually via zoom) so that you can see how the software works in real time and ask questions.

If you have questions about DR panels or your digital x-ray needs we’d love to hear from you. You can email us at sales@mavenimaging.com or call (800) 949-8015. We look forward to hearing from you!
