New Mexico Portable X-ray Regulations

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) runs the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program that oversees portable x-ray registration, licensing, and regulations in the state.

The Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy Program manages the licensing program for New Mexico. 

Registering an X-ray Device

The Radiation Control Bureau covers the registration of portable x-ray equipment in New Mexico. 

Regulations for Portable X-ray Equipment

New Mexico Administrative Code, Title 20 - Environmental Protection, Chapter 3 - Radiation Protection, Part 6 - X-Rays In Healing Arts

Portable or mobile equipment shall be used only for examinations where it is impractical to transfer the patient(s) to a stationary installation.

Regulations also involve:

  • Warning Label
  • Battery Charge Indicator
  • Leakage Radiation from the Diagnostic Source Assembly
  • Radiation from Components other than the Diagnostic Source Assembly
  • Beam Quality
