Missouri Portable X-ray Regulations

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services oversees the x-ray program for the state.

The state of Missouri does not license personnel.

Registering an X-ray Device

All portable x-ray machines are required to be registered with Missouri Radiation Control Program (MRCP) upon installation and every 2 years. 

Safety inspections are conducted at various periods depending on the facility and imaging modality type, ranging from 1-6 years. Inspections are conducted by DHSS staff or DHSS-approved Qualified Experts in radiation safety.

Regulations for Portable X-ray Equipment

19 CSR 20-10.160 Special Requirements for Mobile Medical Radiographic Installations

This rule establishes special requirements for mobile medical radiographic installations:

  • All mobile equipment shall be provided with cones or frames so that the minimum target-to-skin distance is at least 18".
  • The exposure control switch shall be so arranged that the operator can stand at least 6 feet from the patient and outside the primary beam for all exposures.
  • A device shall be provided to terminate the exposure after a preset time.
